Here are some answers to some of the common questions asked about volunteering.
HOW DO I BECOME A VOLUNTEER?
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Make-A-Wish® of Wisconsin! The first step to becoming a volunteer is to attend a new volunteer orientation. New volunteer orientations are held across the state based on need and response. This is an opportunity for you to learn about Make-A-Wish® and the volunteer opportunities available in your area.
Volunteer application paperwork will be available once you have attended an orientation. Make-A-Wish requires national background and reference checks be run for all volunteers. The information is used for screening purposes and to determine volunteer position placement.
For the latest orientation schedule please go the Volunteer Orientation page. Volunteer dates and times are occassionally updated from so please check back for the latest information.
WHAT IS THE APPLICATION PROCESS?
Potential volunteers are asked to attend a new volunteer orientation. Once orientation is complete, you will receive an application packet. Volunteers can fill out application materials on the spot or return them by mail. All application paperwork must be returned within 90 days of the orientation.
When all paperwork is returned, a brief phone interview is given by the volunteer coordinator to determine what position best fi ts your interests, availability and the Foundation’s needs.
After the phone interview, a national background check is run. If the background and reference checks come back clear and there is a volunteer opportunity available in your area, you will be approved and sent a letter welcoming you to the Make-A-Wish family!
WHAT IF SOMETHING APPEARS ON MY BACKGROUND CHECK?
Each volunteer background check is reviewed on a case-by-case basis. However, no person convicted of a violent crime, significant theft or fraud, crime involving moral depravity or a crime against a child can be accepted as a Make-A-Wish volunteer.
CAN ANYONE BE A VOLUNTEER?
To be an approved volunteer or a wish granter, you must be 18 years of age or older.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO BE A WISH GRANTER?
Volunteers that would like to become wish granters must attend additional training and possess a valid driver’s license in order to meet directly with families.
