Relaxation was on the menu during Steven's tasty West Coast wish tour. The California road trip gave his family time to reconnect over delicious food.
Steven has always been an optimistic, outgoing kid who likes playing and watching basketball. He especially loves the Miami Heat and LA Lakers. In 2012, at the age of 14, Steven’s optimism was challenged by a diagnosis of leukemia
He began a long period of treatments and hospital stays and ultimately a bone marrow transplant. While at the hospital and recovering at home, Steven found enjoyment and distraction, watching Food Network shows including Guy Fieri’s “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.”
Sheila Dodds, a Social Worker at Children’s Hospital referred Steven to Make-A-Wish® Wisconsin. When he found out that he qualified for a wish, Steven was thrilled and knew that he wished to go to Southern California to visit some of the restaurants featured in his favorite show.
Steven and his family spent five days in San Diego and Los Angeles, visiting many restaurants. Each one went out of their way to make Steven feel special. Mom’s Tamales shut down the restaurant and invited Steven and his family into the kitchen to make their own tamales. They also had a special cake made just for Steven. The Nickel Diner in L.A. gave them a fantastic meal along with some special gifts. And the Studio Diner gave them both a dining experience and a special tour of their studio lot.
One of the highlights was a visit to Hodad’s Restaurant in Ocean Beach. The owner, Mike Bossman went all out to make Steven and his family, feel at home. Steven commented, “The burgers and milkshakes were the best we ever had. This was our kinda place!”
After returning home, Steven’s mom, Kim said, “We will never forget this experience. We could not have had a better time, and Steven never stopped smiling.”
