Watching videos of Christmas light shows while in the hospital helped Benjamin get through the daily challenges of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), so he knew his ultimate wish was to have a Christmas light show of his own.
Benjamin has had to deal with the ups and downs of leukemia for most of his young life. With the holidays fast approaching all Benjamin had to look forward to was the reality of further treatment and illness. After visiting with him, the Make-A-Wish Wisconsin volunteers learned that his one true wish was to have a synchronized Christmas light show.
Entrusted with Benjamin’s special request, the wish team put together a complete Christmas experience with the help of many partners.
The display took several weeks to create, including synchronizing the 16,000+ lights to dance, flash and simmer to his favorite songs.
The day of the reveal, Benjamin was picked up by a limo and driven to Macy's for a Wish Wednesday celebration where he was greeted by a crowd of supporters. While there Benjamin wrote his letter to Santa and was ushered into dressing rooms filled with holiday attire, toys and treats set up specially for him.
Upon his arrival at home, Benjamin was greeted by family and friends for his lighting ceremony. With a countdown and a push of a button, the synchronized Christmas light show lit up not only the entire neighborhood, but Benjamin's face with pure joy.
“For that day I forgot he has cancer. Ben loved it so much that it was like having a normal kid again. It was the perfect wish for all of us,” says Benjamin’s mother Nicole.
As Benjamin continues his treatments, he has the memories of his wish to spark hope, strength and joy. Nicole shared that "He loves talking about his wish to his doctors and nurses. He even shows them videos of it!"
