Shelby is a 7-year-old girl who has battled congenital anomalies all her life. She adores anything and everything animals, playing dress up with sparkly clothes, using her creativity to color and draw and most of all, loves unicorns.
Shelby always wanted to see a unicorn in person and had very specific ideas of what they looked like and where they come from. “Shelby’s always been a very creative child,” remarked her Mom. Shelby believes all unicorns come from Scotland and requested that the “Queen of Scotland” be at her wish.
The day her wish came true, Shelby saw the realm of fantasy meet her everyday world as she came face-to-face with a sparkling unicorn. Her entire family had their spirits lifted by the priceless look on her face, as well as the generosity of everyone who gave their time and resources to make her wish come true.
“Shelby was in absolute awe to see the amount of people that came out to support her. We had not experienced a whole lot of physical presence in regards to support outside of family. It really helped her to see it wasn’t just Mom and Dad that were in her corner,” exclaimed her Mom after the wish. Shelby was no longer thinking about her illness; she was a joyful princess in her own fairy tale.
Shelby had spent her life fighting to be comfortable in her own skin, yet thanks to the positive influence of this wish experience Shelby has shown new found hope, strength and self-confidence. Her Mom says that “Shelby now has the confidence to better describe to me and her medical team how she is physically feeling, in turn resulting in better treatment for her pain and fatigue.”
